Damascus, SANA-The Ministry of Interior expressed deep concern over the bloody developments witnessed in Sweida Governorate in recent hours, which have resulted in an initial toll of over 30 fatalities and around 100 injuries. These unfortunate armed confrontations erupted between local military groups and clans in al-Maqous neighborhood of Sweida city, following a backdrop of accumulated tensions in preceding periods.
In a statement received by SANA, the Ministry said: “This dangerous escalation comes in light of the absence of relevant official institutions, leading to worsening chaos, a collapse of the security situation, and the local community’s inability to contain the crisis despite repeated calls for calm. This has increased the number of casualties and poses a direct threat to civil peace in the region.”
The Ministry affirmed that units of its forces, in coordination with the Ministry of Defense, will begin direct intervention in the area to end the conflict and impose security. Those responsible for the violence will be pursued and brought to the competent judiciary to prevent future tragedies, restore stability, and reinforce the rule of law.
The statement added: “We urge all local parties to cooperate with internal security forces, exercise restraint, and support efforts for de-escalation. Continued conflict serves only to promote chaos and intensify the suffering of our civilian population. We stress the importance of quickly deploying security forces in the governorate and initiating a comprehensive dialogue that addresses the root causes of tension while preserving the dignity and rights of all societal components in Sweida.
