Syria, Jordan agree on charting roadmap for economic cooperation

Damascus, SANA- Participants in the joint Syrian-Jordanian meeting between the Syrian Federation of Chambers of Commerce and the Jordan Chamber of Commerce emphasized the importance of developing a roadmap. This roadmap will establish future cooperation and coordination between Syria and Jordan in the fields of investment, trade exchange, transport and shipping, industry, agriculture, banking, and food industries.

During the meeting held Monday at the Seven Gates Hotel “Sheraton” in Damascus, participants agreed to form a Syrian-Jordanian Business Council and sectoral committees. These committees will study obstacles to economic activity and propose solutions.

Additionally, they agreed to establish a coordination office between the Syrian Federation of Chambers of Commerce and the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, twin Syrian and Jordanian chambers of commerce, and facilitate the entry of Syrian traders and industrialists into Jordanian territory.

The participants also recommended holding a joint economic forum in Damascus and an industrial exhibition organized by the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, with dates for both to be determined later.

Alia Omar al-Ali, head of the Syrian Federation of Chambers of Commerce, told SANA that economic relations between the two countries must return to all levels after facing setbacks during the deposed regime’s era. This resurgence aims to maximize benefits for both sides by developing joint cooperation and enhancing competitiveness among products.

She pointed out that the shared economic challenges facing both countries necessitate coordinated efforts to achieve mutual interests.

Al-Ali noted that today’s meeting paves the way for creating channels of permanent communication between the two countries, reassessing and developing trade exchanges, and strengthening partnership agreements, especially regarding import and export.

For his part, Khalil Mohammad al-Hajj Tawfiq, head of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, stressed that the trade delegation’s visit to Syria is historic after a hiatus of nearly 14 years.

He highlighted the sincere desire of traders and industrialists in Jordan to participate in a new phase of economic work and cooperation that serves the interests of both countries and moves towards a new era of reconstruction, prosperity, and progress for the Syrian people.

Al-Hajj Tawfiq also emphasized the importance of private sector cooperation between the two countries through commercial partnerships in vital sectors.

He reaffirmed the importance of revitalizing economic activity in Syria, which represents a shared interest, requiring more communication and cooperation to overcome any obstacles that might hinder the work of business owners and companies in both countries.

From his side, Engineer Issam al-Ghraywati, head of the Damascus Chamber of Commerce, pointed to the necessity of utilizing available resources in both countries to build joint ventures, robust exports, and high-level technical and service cooperation.

He affirmed that industrial cities across Syria are ready to accommodate Jordanian participation in the local investment environment.

Nabil al-Khatib, First Vice President of the Amman Chamber, emphasized the need for cooperation between the two countries in the logistics sector to facilitate the unimpeded movement of goods.
