Britain, France, and Turkey stress the need to respect Syria’s sovereignty and lift sanctions on it

New York, SANA- Britain, France, and Turkey renewed their support for Syria in its quest for peace, reconstruction, and stability.
They emphasized the need to respect its sovereignty and lift Western sanctions, and welcomed the steps taken within the framework of the political process in the country.

In a speech during yesterday’s UN Security Council session on Syria, James Kariuki, Deputy Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations, welcomed the participation of Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani in the session and the raising of the new Syrian flag at UN headquarters, describing it as a powerful reminder of Syria’s historic opportunity to forge a more secure and prosperous future.

In his speech, published on the British Foreign Office website, Kariuki affirmed his country’s support for the Syrian people at this historic moment.

He noted the remarkable progress Syria had achieved in the political transition process, including the formation of a new government, steps toward reconciliation between Syria’s various communities, the establishment of a constitutional committee, and efforts to address the  immediate security threats.

After years of war and brutality under the Assad regime, issues of transitional justice and accountability must be a top priority, Kariuki said.

The official described the meetings between the Syrian government and international financial institutions in New York as an important step in strengthening international support and stimulating economic growth, he underlined the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, warning that Israeli attacks on Syrian territory could destabilize the region.

In his remarks, France’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jérôme Bonnafont, welcomed the presence of Minister al-Shaibani at the Security Council session, stressing that his country will stand by the new Syria in its quest for peace, reconciliation and reconstruction.

According to the French mission’s page in New York, Bonnafont described the raising of the new Syrian flag at the United Nations as a sign of the shared commitment between the Syrian authorities and the United Nations to building a peaceful, united, and prosperous Syria for the benefit of its people and the entire region.
The French diplomat also addressed the Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, calling for an immediate halt to these violations.

For his part, Turkey’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ahmet Yıldız, called in his speech for the lifting of sanctions on Syria and the provision of international support for reconstruction.

Yıldız said that Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani’s participation in the session was not only an indication of the significant progress his country has achieved in a short period of time, but also reflects Syria’s strong commitment to international engagement.

Yıldız stressed the need to immediately lift sanctions imposed on Syria, noting that Turkey has made a clear appeal to the international community to provide effective support for the Syrian reconstruction process.
