Eid Sweets in Damascus: The Return of “Ma’amoul” Aroma After Lean Years

Damascus, SANA-With the dawn of Eid al-Fitr, the joyous celebrations of Damascene families have returned to their former glory, bringing with them the essence of deep-rooted traditions that have long distinguished this ancient city.

This year, the Eid has witnessed a remarkable revival of homemade Eid sweets, especially “Ma’amoul”—a dessert that embodies the spirit of Syrian heritage. This resurgence comes amid a public atmosphere of joy following the revolution’s victory and progress toward stability.

Ma’amoul: A Childhood Memory and the Scent of History

In the past, families would gather days before Eid to prepare Ma’amoul by hand, using wooden molds engraved with decorative patterns. Women competed in showcasing their skills by filling the dough with dates, walnuts, or pistachios, while men handled the roasting and grinding of nuts.

Um Ali, a 65-year-old woman, told SANA: “Neighbors used to cooperate in making Ma’amoul. Each family prepared large quantities to distribute among relatives, and we considered it an opportunity to connect before Eid.”

Years of War: Sweets Reflecting Resilience

During the years of war, such practices turned into a challenge for families as the prices of essential ingredients like sugar, flour, and ghee soared.

Many resorted to lower-quality substitutes or ceased making the sweets entirely. However, with the Syrian revolution’s victory and the beginning of recovery, life has gradually returned to normal.

Economic researchers note a 30% decrease in food prices compared to last year, reviving hope for the renewal of traditions.

The First Eid After Victory: A Double Celebration

In Damascus’s old neighborhoods, such as al-Shaghour, al-Midan, and al-Salihiya, residents describe this Eid as “exceptional,” as the joy of victory coincides with the communal spirit of making sweets.

Abu Muhammad, a 45-year-old nut shop owner in al-Salihiya’s Friday Souq (market), said, “This is the first year I’ve seen such a high demand for pistachios and walnuts in years. People are now able to afford Ma’amoul ingredients again,” adding that the government’s financial grant to employees before Eid helped boost the markets.

“Al-Sekbah”: Syrian Generosity Embodied in Tradition

Eid rituals in Damascus are incomplete without “al-Sekbah,” a social tradition reflecting Syrian generosity, where families open their doors to guests throughout the holiday, offering them an array of sweets, fruits, and nuts, especially Ma’amoul.

Samar, a 32-year-old housewife, explained, “al-Sekbah is not just hospitality; it’s a message that Damascenes support one another, no matter the circumstances.”

From Past to Present: Damascus Heritage Lives On

Today, despite the spread of ready-made sweets, most Damascene families prefer homemade production—not only to savor the authentic taste but also to maintain an emotional connection to the city’s memory.

Youth initiatives have also emerged to promote these traditions through educational workshops on Ma’amoul-making, as part of efforts to preserve intangible heritage.

This year, Eid celebrations in Damascus have returned with a new spirit, carrying with them the triumph of popular will and reaffirming that the flavor of Ma’amoul and the aroma of coffee accompanying “al-Sekbah” will remain part of a collective identity linking personal joy with national pride.
