Despite the challenges, Idlib University records a distinguished presence, scientific development at local and international levels

Idlib, SANA-Since its establishment at the end of 2015 until now, Idlib University has recorded scientific development at the local, regional and international levels. Today, it includes 18 colleges that include medical, engineering, electronic, electrical, applied and theoretical specializations, in addition to 8 technical and linguistic institutes. The number of students registered in its colleges and institutes to date has reached 21,597 male and female students, while the number of students registered in the postgraduate studies stage has reached 880 male and female students.

Dr. Abdul Hamid Al-Khaled, the university president, stated in a statement to SANA that the university faced major challenges during the period of the former regime, most notably the siege imposed on northern Syria, and the resulting severe difficulty in securing the entry of devices, equipment and materials needed by the university and even educational cadres with rare specializations, in addition to the continuous bombing of the university’s infrastructure and laboratories, which caused periodic damage to its buildings and laboratory and educational equipment and the intermittent suspension of work as a result of the continuous bombing of the city and the temporary displacement of residents and students.

Among the difficulties that the university faced, according to the university president, was the shortage of teaching staff in various specializations, especially medical and engineering, which forced the university to rely on graduates in some cases, as well as the severe shortage of funding to the extent that the university relied on student fees in some stages.

He Pointed out that most of the college buildings are schools belonging to the Ministry of Education, which has put great pressure on the infrastructure in terms of capacity, as a result of the increasing demand for registration at the university.

The university’s achievements since its establishment

The university president stated that despite all the challenges it faced during the defunct regime, it has granted 40 doctoral degrees and 135 master’s degrees to male and female students in various specializations, while the number of graduates from the first university stage exceeded 16,000 thousand male and female students, since its establishment until now.

After the liberation, the university president affirmed that an integrated plan had been put in place to enhance and develop the academic process, by achieving international higher education quality standards and obtaining accreditation from the world’s most prestigious universities.

40 internationally published scientific research papers and international agreements that enhance the exchange of expertise

Regarding the agreements signed by the university locally and internationally, Dr. Al-Khaled said that the university has signed cooperation agreements with local universities, such as the Northern Private University, and international universities, such as the Pakistani State University “SMBB”.

He added that in order to develop quality assurance systems and standards and management and governance structures at the university, work was done to make good network of relationships with regional and international academic bodies, by obtaining membership in a number of international academic networks and institutions.
